On his sixth birthday, Engin is taken from a Turkish women’s prison, where he lives with his mother, and sent by social services to relatives in a coastal village. Awkward among the boys there, he braids the hair of his one friend, Nergis, and is bullied for it. Nergis shows him an old boat: if he can swim, they can reach it and bring his mother home. His teenage cousin Mustafa agrees to teach him, but only if he plays football with the boys first. Desperate, he charges into the game, fails, but earns his swimming lesson. Triumphant, he tells Nergis they can go, only to learn his mother is jailed for killing his father in self-defense and can never leave. He swims out, pushes the boat into the lake, and watches it sink.
