In seven astute chapters, this film documents the work of doctors and nurses in the palliative care unit at Vienna General Hospital or outpatient hospice care, accompanying patients on their final journey. Although we see family members and impending goodbyes in the dialogues, the film gradually delves deeper into the relationship between the dying and their healthcare professionals: repeatedly, the tension between professional care and emotional closeness is palpable.
The film offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by those who work with death on a daily basis. At the same time, it shows how enriching this type of support can be when contemplating old age, illness, and death. In the face of others’ dying, our attitude toward life and our own mortality are also confronted.
