Leonid (95) still goes to the gym and delivers spirited speeches at his memorial association. But more than anything, he issues the warning “No more war!” As a child, he survived the Siege of Leningrad – the systematic starvation of what is now St. Petersburg by Nazi Germany.

Yet in the light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Leonid himself senses that his voice, and those of his fellow campaigners, are increasingly being ignored and made insignificant. HOW TO REMEMBER is the portray of a Soviet-influenced generation caught between grief and the will to survive, remembrance and repression, and criticism and loyalty to a totalitarian state that defined their identity throughout their lives and now instrumentalizes them.
